“Who is Shef and The Kitchen?” you probably asking yourself.
We took to the streets again and this time, we met up with a band all the way from Orange Farm, by the name Shef and The Kitchen, which started in the year 2011 which consist of 5 members, namely: Shef Sphiwe Hlophe (vocalist) Khanyisile Mlenzane (lead guitarist) Freddy Mathetha (bass guitarist) William Mathetha (drummer) Mzi Dlamini (keyboardist), they define their music as Afro Jazz Funk
Why the name Shef and The Kitchen?
Shef and the Kitchen: We believe that there’s a hunger of music, so our vision is to serve people music, we cook it for them, and serve them
As you guys started at the year 2011, I believe you were still young, what wasn’t it hard for you guys? What were the challenges you guys faced?
The most common challenge we faced was school, as that is what our parents expected from us, some of us where in high school, others pursuing a qualification at college, other than that, we had to somehow fend for ourselves and find employment and now we had to explain to our families that we actually are now musicians and want to do this for a living.
We also had challenges about instruments as we had no funding, so we had to get instruments on our own.
So when you guys decided to start a band and do music, was it something that you planned to do for a living or prepared something to fall back on?
Our main focus is music, but we do have somethings to fall back on, most of us have qualifications and we aim to get more.
